Cruise day, sorted: PortMiami to the airport without the scramble
Your ship docks at 7 am and your flight leaves at 6 pm. Here is how to turn that gap into a beach day instead of a bench at the gate.
PortMiami handles more cruise passengers than any port on earth, and on a busy Saturday that can mean more than 50,000 people leaving ships in the same few hours. Taxi lines stretch down the terminal, rideshare prices spike, and many travelers end up at Miami International Airport by 9 am for an evening flight. It does not have to go that way.
Why a one-way rental makes sense
A car gives you control over the day. You can store luggage in the trunk, spend the afternoon at the beach or in Wynwood, and drop the car at the airport two hours before your flight. With our free one-way drop at MIA or Fort Lauderdale, it often costs less than a rideshare to the airport plus luggage storage.
How the morning works
Before you sail
Book at least 72 hours ahead and add your ship name to the reservation. We track arrival times for every terminal and schedule your pickup around your disembarkation group. For groups of five or more, choose the Chevy Tahoe or Kia Carnival so luggage fits.
Getting off the ship
Self-assist disembarkation, where you carry your own bags off, usually gets you out first, often by 7:30 am. After customs, follow ground transportation signs to Lot D. Our crew wears coral shirts and holds a sign with your last name.
Loading up
We help load bags and do a quick photo inspection of the car together. The whole handoff takes about 10 minutes, and you will be on the MacArthur Causeway heading to the beach while the taxi line is still growing.
What to do with the day
- Brunch in South Beach, then a few hours on the sand at Lummus Park
- The Wynwood Walls and a coffee on NW 2nd Avenue
- Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Coconut Grove
- A drive over the Rickenbacker to Key Biscayne for a quieter beach
- Shopping at Dolphin Mall, 15 minutes from the airport
Keep valuables and passports with you, not in the trunk, and park in attended lots or garages when you stop.
Returning at the airport
Our airport lot is six minutes from the MIA Rental Car Center by shuttle. Plan to return the car three hours before an international flight and two hours before a domestic one. Pull into the returns lane, we check the car and hand you a receipt, and the shuttle drops you at the MIA Mover for terminal connections.
Flying out of Fort Lauderdale instead? Our FLL lot is about 35 minutes from PortMiami in normal traffic, and the drop is also free.
Pickup before the cruise
Some guests arrive in Miami a day or two before sailing. You can rent from the airport, explore, and return the car at PortMiami on embarkation morning. We shuttle you and your bags to the terminal door. Parking at the port runs about $25 per day, so returning the car usually saves money on longer cruises.
A few practical notes
Cruise mornings can be hot and humid even in winter, so keep water in the car. If your ship is delayed by weather, we hold reservations until 2 pm on ship days and will call you. And if plans change entirely, pay-later bookings cancel free up to 24 hours ahead.
